Dime's debit card safety tips always come in handy
The more you know about threats to your debit card security, the better prepared you'll be. At Dime Bank, we want you to have the information you need to keep your card secure.
- Be mindful of your surroundings when using an ATM.
- When using a walk-up ATM, try to park as close as possible to the machine.
- Never write your PIN on your card or keep it in the same spot as your card.
- Do not use a PIN that is easy to guess, such as your birthday or last four numbers of your SSN.
- Use different PINs for different cards.
- Look out for skimmers and shimmers (more information below)
- Check the terminal by pulling to see if the card reader or keypad seem loose or out of place.
- Check for any resistance when swiping or inserting your card as these can be signs that the terminal has been tampered with.
- Use your digital wallet to tap-to-pay where available for additional protection.
- Consider restricting your card through your online banking app when not in use.
- If you notice any charges, you did not authorize, contact your bank to dispute them immediately.
Skimming Devices
Skimming devices are installed over the card reader slot for an ATM or POS terminal. These can be false keypads placed over the actual keypad with a hidden camera to record what PIN you enter. Once a card is inserted into a skimmer, the data is pulled from the magnetic strip and stored electronically for criminals to use later.
Shimming Devices
Shimmers are more difficult to spot than skimmers. A shim is inserted into the actual slot where your chip is inserted and contains a microchip and flash storage to copy and save your card number and PIN.
If your debit card has been compromised, contact us immediately. You can also lock your debit card using our mobile app.

A scam pretending to be your bank usually shows itself through urgency or unusual requests. If someone pressures you to act immediately, asks for your password or security codes, tells you to transfer money, or sends a link asking you to log in, it’s almost certainly fraudulent. Real banks don’t rush you, don’t ask for sensitive information, and expect you to use their official website or app directly.
If you believe you have been contacted by someone pretending to be from Dime Bank, please call us immediately.
Phishing is when someone tries to trick you into sharing personal or financial information.
